Electric grids and other critical infrastructure increasingly intersect with stressed natural environments, where drought, heat, and vegetation growth are driving up wildfire risk and outage events.

Founded in 2018 by Indra den Bakker and Anniek Schouten in Lisbon, Overstory uses AI and satellite-derived intelligence to monitor vegetation and infrastructure interactions in near real time.

Its platform ingests multispectral imagery and other geospatial data, then applies machine learning models to detect species, growth patterns and hazardous conditions around power lines and assets. The system identifies high-priority areas, forecasts vegetation encroachment and quantifies fire and reliability risk, enabling utilities to transition from time-based to risk-based maintenance planning.

The company closed a $43 million Series B round led by Blume Equity, with participation from Energy Impact Partners LP, and other existing backers including B Capital, Pale Blue Dot, Semapa Next, CapitalT, Bentley Systems, Convective Capita Moxxie Ventures and MCJ, bringing total funding to over $70 dollars. The new capital is earmarked to strengthen its AI and data infrastructure, enhance its wildfire prevention services and expand its global reach.
