This week, both Anthropic and OpenAI released new studies on how people use their chatbots. The chart above shows ChatGPT usage patterns. Most interactions fall into three main categories: practical guidance (teaching, advice, ideation), writing (communication, editing, critique), and seeking information (specific facts). The widely reported use cases of technical help or self-expression together account for less than 12%. Hence, we see that people turn to chatbots for a grand variety of purposes beyond their most obvious applications.
