Linux Foundation launches Agentic AI Foundation

On December 8, the Linux Foundation, the non-profit that stewards large-scale open-source infrastructure, announced the formation of the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). The new foundation is designed as a neutral platform to guide the transparent, collaborative evolution of agentic AI systems and the standards they rely on.

Founding donations from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Block provide the initial technical backbone for AAIF. Each company has contributed key open-source components intended to standardise how agentic AI connects to tools, data, and real-world workflows.

OpenAI contributed AGENTS.md, a specification that defines how AI coding agents should behave and operate consistently across different code repositories. This creates a shared rulebook for building and deploying code-focused agents in heterogeneous development environments.

Block donated goose, a local-first framework for constructing agentic workflows that can run close to user data and systems. Goose is designed to integrate with emerging standards, making it easier for organisations to orchestrate multi-step agent behaviors.

Anthropic provided the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables AI models to connect uniformly to external tools, data sources, and applications, making it easier to plug different models into the same operational stack.

Platinum members including AWS, Google, Microsoft, Cloudflare, and Bloomberg signal a cross-sector commitment to interoperable AI agents. Their participation underlines the relevance of open, standardised agentic systems for cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, financial services, and data-intensive media.

By targeting fragmentation in agentic AI, AAIF aims to enable interoperability across models, tools, data, and workflows, ensuring more reliable growth aligned with open-source principles. With core protocols donated into an open governance structure, the initiative prioritises shared infrastructure over proprietary silos, accelerating adoption in enterprise and regulated environments.

The launch of AAIF reinforces a clear direction: the future of agentic AI is built on open standards and open-source components, with neutral governance at the center of its production-scale deployment.
