Founded by Pedro Gómez and Maria Laparidou in 2019, Munich-based Orbem combines accelerated MRI hardware and deep neural networks to examine biological materials at production line speeds without the need for invasive probing or radiation exposure.

The company's Genus platform, which includes Genus Focus for in-ovo egg sexing, Genus Scale for fertility detection and Genus Echo for fruit grading, processes complex MRI signals using models that have been trained on a large, proprietary biological dataset. This enables the identification of simple biomarkers such as fertility status, defects or dehydration that were previously invisible. The same AI-powered imaging stack is being developed for use in human health applications, providing fast, non-invasive insights that could support more proactive and preventive care.

Orbem has recently raised €55.5 million in a Series B funding round led by Innovation Industries, with participation from Supernova Invest, and follow-on backing from investors including General Catalyst, 83North, The Venture Collective and Possible Ventures. The new capital will accelerate expansion into the US, increase poultry deployments, further expand into fruit and vegetable processing, and fund R&D to adapt the same MRI-plus-AI platform for healthcare diagnostics.
