UMA, a Paris-based stealth robotic startup, has been operating in stealth mode while developing a new generation of general-purpose mobile and humanoid robots.

We know from their website and other channels that the company’s goal is to create machines capable of performing human-level tasks in both industrial and commercial environments. These machines will be trained using a blend of advanced simulation, reinforcement learning and full-stack robotics engineering to understand their surroundings, manipulate objects with precision and adapt to real-world conditions.

UMA has an exceptional level of technical expertise for a company in its early stages due to their combination of scientific leadership and industry experience. The company's founders - Rémi Cadène (CEO), Robert Knight (Chief Robot Officer), Pierre Sermanet (Chief Science Officer) and Simon Alibert (CTO) - have gained experience at Meta AI, Google DeepMind, Tesla, and other major research institutions. They are supported by an advisory board that includes Yann LeCun, Thomas Wolf, Matthieu Cord, and other high-profile figures who have shaped modern machine learning and robotic perception.

UMA's arrival adds meaningful weight to Europe’s growing robotics ecosystem. Although there has been increased activity in autonomous systems and humanoid engineering on the continent, UMA distinguishes itself through the scale of its technical ambition. By initially focusing on economically significant industrial environments and basing its development on cutting-edge research, UMA is well-positioned to become a driving force behind Europe’s next wave of robotics innovation, hopefully influencing both scientific progress and large-scale real-world deployment.
